Le saviez-vous ? A.R.T.E signifie Association Relative à la Télévision Européenne, un projet culturel au cœur de l’amitié franco-allemande après la chute du mur de Berlin, au sortir de la Guerre Froide.
By Livia Wakam Epée and Marwa Sidi Yacoub
During our stay in Strasbourg, on Wednesday, we had the opportunity to visit Arte with our German mates. We were warmly welcomed by a woman with an inspiring professional background, who was among the pioneers of the channel. She was able to share with us and discuss the early days of Arte, as well as what the channel represents today, both for French students and German students. She explained that it all began with two men representing France and Germany, Helmut Kohl and François Mitterrand, who wished to unite Europe and bring it together through friendship. In 1991, Arte was created as an economic association operating in partnership with other broadcasting organizations.

Following this brief moment of history, we met the channel’s editor-in-chief, who gave us a tour of Arte’s premises. Meanwhile, he explained the four main steps in creating the « 28-minutes » daily magazine, from the editorial choices at 10 am till broadcasting at 7pm in Germany (8pm in France).
We then were able to discover the Arte live broadcast studio.
We would like to express our gratitude to the organizations that made this trip possible.
