Belfast Titanic Museum

The Titanic is one of the most famous and tragic ships in maritime history. Her story, closely linked to the city of Belfast, still fascinates millions of people around the world. It was in this Northern Irish city that the prestigious liner was designed and built, before sinking on her maiden voyage in 1912. Today, the Belfast Titanic Museum retraces the full epic story of the Titanic an immersive and educational experience.

The ship’s story

At the time, Titanic was one of the largest and most opulent ships in the world. she was also considered unsinkable, due to a series of compartment doors that could be closed if the bow was breached. There were around 2 thousand passengers when it set sail on its maiden voyage the 10th April in 1912. However, four days into the trip, the Titanic struck an iceberg, and less than three hours later it sank. More than 1,500 passengers and crew died during the terrible accident.

The ship’s particularities and its link with Belfast

The Titanic was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in East-Belfast with the efforts of 15000 men.

Belfast’s shipbuilding industry played a vital role in shaping the city’s identity and economy.

The Titanic’s size and specifications were absolutely breathtaking at the time _ it mesured 269 meters long and weighted 46 328 tons. Her three main propellers navigated at a maximum speed of 23 knots (around 43 km/h). The ship’s iconic architecture featured luxurious cabins, with facilities like a gym, pool, turkish baths, a kennel for first-class dogs, and a squash court.

Inside the museum

The Belfast Titanic Museum opened in 2012 for the centenary of the shipwreck that happened in 1912. The museum is build at the same place the ship was made and has the shape of the front of a ship. Through 9 interactive rooms, the Titanic Museum explains and illustrates : the story of Belfast during industrial time, the construction of the Titanic, the story of the maiden voyage and the infamous sinking as well as the research that was made afterwards to find the ship. The museum exposes a few artefacts from the Titanic and proposes an interactive experience to discover and understand the whole story of the Titanic. Just next to the Museum is the ship “SS Nomadic”, often referred as the Titanic’s little sister, it is the last remaining ship of the White Star Line and it is now turned into a museum.
